When
did you know you wanted to be a writer?
When I moved with my family to a town with very few
employment opportunities, I had too much unproductive time on my hands. Since
authors can work anywhere they happened to be, I got serious about writing.
Can
you describe your typical writing routine?
After I see my son off to school, I sit down at my desk to
look at e-mail and the news. I do a little web surfing to get the cobwebs out
of the way, and then I pull up my latest file and get started.
Do
you have any habits you have to do while writing (snacking, listening to music,
silence, writing late at night, etc?)
I usually prefer silence, particularly when I’m trying to
work out a plot. I can’t really concentrate with anyone else in the room. I do have a play list of music I listen to,
if I need a certain sort of energy to make its way onto the page.
Have
you ever written a character that resembles you?
All of my characters resemble me in some small fashion, be
they good or bad. My heroes and heroines are always, sadly, much better
looking.
What are some important qualities in remaining sane as a writer?
Sanity is overrated in a
writer. A better question for me is how do I keep my self-esteem up in the face
of headwinds? I remind myself that everyone’s journey is different, that my
time will come, and that I will have plenty of opportunities to prove
myself. Patience may be a real virtue,
but it is not my strong suit.
Do you have any advice to aspiring writers?
Writing is a bit like using an
old water pump. Lots of mud and rust
will come out of the spigot before you get to the pure stuff. Join a critique
group, if possible, to get reactions to your work. Keep an open mind when you
listen to feedback. Always strive to write better.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next project?
Although fantasy is my first
love, I’m switching genres for a little while to write romance. My current project is a Victorian
romance. After that… well, I haven’t
decided!
